Green Dog Pet Supply in Portland, OR, took home an honorable mention in the 2020 PETS+ America’s Coolest Stores contest. Christine and Michael Maller opened the store in 2004, with years of zookeeping and retail experience, respectively. Their commitment to sustainability applies to the products carried to materials used in the store. Reclaimed doors, windows, barn wood, picket fences and railings make up the walls and store fixtures, creating a farmhouse chic aesthetic. Reclaimed doors are used throughout the store in displays. As are farm tables and shelves. Cabinetry got a new life at the store’s former location, and the couple moved it to the new store in 2010. An “Eats” sign leads to the food room. Reclaimed barn doors separate the sales floor from the back room. Product displays often feature a sustainably theme and/or fundraising campaign. The store carries many products made in the Portland area. Another locally made product. The store fundraised for pets displaced by Hurricane Harvey. During the pandemic, Green Dog Pet Supply closed to in-store shopping. Orders were picked up at a table outside. Employees talked to customers through a window. Customers could also ask to see products when picking up orders. Pups could come inside to see their favorite employees. Long before the pandemic hit, Christine and Michael helped to create a coalition of Portland-area independent pet stores. The stores continued to support each other during the pandemic.
