(PRESS RELEASE) The Bird Enjoyment & Advantage Koalition (BEAK) and its consumer-facing campaign, MyBird,  announced the three winners of the annual “My Beautiful Pet Bird” contest. Held over the summer, this contest invited bird owners across the U.S. to submit original photos or short videos showcasing their pets’ unique beauty. After the general public voted for their favorite birds out of over 800 entries, a panel of judges selected three winners from the top ten entries as determined by popular vote. These three winners were announced on the 6th annual National Pet Bird Day, September 17, 2024.

MyBird and BEAK congratulate the following bird owners for their winning entries in this year’s “My Beautiful Pet Bird” contest:

  • Neil and Mindy Grossman with their bird Tiki, a Yellow Naped Amazon Parrot. With his photo of Tiki captioned, “Posing for photos is my favorite thing to do!”, Neil and Mindy were the first-place winner, earning a cash prize of $500.
  • Jennifer Castellano with her bird Sunny, a 20-year-old female sun conure. As the second-place winner, Jennifer received a cash prize of $250!
  • Diana Lopez with her bird Bruno, a two-year-old cockatiel. According to Diana, Bruno’s passion is hanging upside down and saying, “pretty bird Bruno, good night, Bruno, and good morning, Bruno,” as well as barking like a dog. His favorite whistle is a catcall. As the third-place winner, Diana earned a cash prize of $100.

The “My Beautiful Pet Bird” contest was sponsored by three members of BEAK: the World Pet Association, Higgins Premium Pet Foods and Vitakraft. Formed in 2016, BEAK consists of bird product manufacturers and associations united to address the need for responsible bird ownership and growth. The group created MyBird as a way to engage current and potential bird owners, encourage interest in pet bird ownership and provide education on responsible bird care.

Established by BEAK in 2019, National Pet Bird Day serves as an opportunity to celebrate the many joys and benefits of owning an avian companion. At MyBird.org – which has received approximately 3 million visitors over the past five years – current and prospective bird owners will find a trove of resources, including an interactive quiz that helps match users with types of birds that may be right for their lifestyle based on factors such as time, financial commitments, living arrangements and more. Approximately 1.9 million people have taken this quiz!

MyBird.org also includes fact sheets about popular types of pet birds and locator tools for finding birds available for adoption or purchase, avian veterinarians, bird clubs and avian boarding facilities. As National Pet Bird Day approaches, site visitors can access a variety of engaging resources, including free, downloadable graphics and social media posts, that they can use to join in the festivities.
