(PRESS RELEASE) SACRAMENTO, CA — For more than 30 years, Bird Talk Magazine provided information and entertainment to thousands and thousands of families every month with intriguing features, gorgeous photographs and fun columns. It was a standard in many homes with birds. And then “poof!” — in September of 2012 it was no more.

That is until now. Two former writers and employees of the magazine missed it so much they got the rights to the name and are building an audience from scratch. Jessica Pineda, former senior associate editor of the magazine, along with Patricia Sund, writer behind the popular Bird Talk column “Memo to Parker and Pepper,” are now at the helm of the magazine with a new look, a fresh approach and high hopes.

“Bird Talk readers missed it so much and we just couldn’t sit idly by and ignore the needs of this publication any longer,” Sund said. “It was needed too. The internet provides a lot of good bird information, but it’s interspersed with lousy information and is scattered all over the web. We wanted one source that consistently provided reliable information in a gorgeous new package.”

The new magazine is a bi-monthly publication, with its first issue the June/July 2018 edition. The digital version of the issue has already been released publicly, and bird owners love the new style, look and content. The magazine is a massive 132 pages, covering the latest in avian health and care, bird behavior basics and a look at wild palm cockatoos.

“The new era of Bird Talk has begun,” Pineda said. She takes the helm of the magazine as editor-in-chief. “We want to make this magazine a valuable resource for everyone — from bird owner to bird store owner to avian veterinarian — and continue Bird Talk’s mission of providing better care for pet birds.”

[Update March 2020: No new Bird Talk magazines were issued after January 2019, the subscription page is down, and Wikipedia contributors reported no responses to email or to Facebook posts. The magazine seems to be out of business.]

NASC Media Spotlight

At first it was just an idea: Animal supplements needed the same quality control that human-grade supplements receive. But that was enough to start a movement and an organization —the National Animal Supplement Council — that would be dedicated to establishing a comprehensive path forward for the animal supplements industry. In this Media Spotlight interview, NASC’s president, Bill Bookout, talks to PETS+ interviewer Chloe DiVita about the industry today: Where it’s headed, what’s the latest focus and why it’s vital to gain the involvement of independent pet product retailers.
