Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food Donates Over 10,000 Pounds of Premium Nutrition and Low-Calorie Dog Treats

(PRESS RELEASE) COS COB, CT – Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food, a leading super premium pet food company, recently donated 10,277 pounds of their nutritious pet food and low-calorie, all-natural dog treats to help feed animals in need in the Metro Detroit area. The donation is part of the pet food company’s Fill A Bowl… Feed A Soul (FABFAS) program, a national campaign targeting one million meals for shelter pets annually.

The food was first shipped to Premier Pets in Beverly Hills, MI where owner Mike Palmer oversaw the distribution to local shelters and food banks desperate for nutritious food to feed their pets. “We feel so fortunate to be able to help make the community a better place for both humans and animals,” said Mr. Palmer. “The positive energy and the passion from the rescue organizations is contagious. These rescues work so hard and do an incredible job of caring for and providing refuge for so many animals, this is the least we can do. But we truly wouldn’t be able to do it without our customers and the support of everyone in the community.”

“Working with Premier Pets has been the perfect partnership,” said Jeanne Blandford, Director of Marketing for Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food. “Many rescue organizations do not have the means to take in such a large quantity of food. Mike facilitated the process by accepting the food at his Beverly Hills location and then distributing appropriate quantities to each rescue in his community.”

Some recipients of the generous donation were: Almost Home Animal Haven in Southfield, MI, Michigan Animal Rescue, Pontiac, MI, Good Karma Puppy Rescue, White Lake, MI, Special Animal Friends and Rescue (Safari) in Livonia, MI and Paws in the D, Detroit, MI.

Charmaine Wichmann, Director of Good Karma Puppy Rescue, travels deep into the Appalachian Trail where she rescues dogs from Kentucky and West Virginia and brings them to Michigan to be treated, neutered/spayed, evaluated and adopted to welcoming homes.

“As a foster-based rescue, our fosters love and care for the puppies until they find their forever homes. Having the resources to care for puppies is a top priority. We are always in need of fosters, and we appreciate the generous donation given to us by Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food,” said Ms. Wichmann.

In addition to this recent donation to the Metro Detroit area, Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food recently partnered with Bissell Pet Foundation on their Empty the Shelters (ETS) event held on May 5th, donating 2,500 5-pound bags of cat and dog food. The food was part of the AdoptBoxes volunteers handed out to those adopting dogs and cats during this one-day event. More than 2,650 pets from 112 shelters in the United States found homes during this event. In Michigan, 66 rescue organizations participated and 752 dogs and 659 cats were adopted during this event.

“Chicken Soup for the Soul’s FABFAS program was created to help feed pets in need nationwide,” said Chris Mitchell, Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food CEO. “We work closely with our independent pet specialty retailers to identify rescue organizations in their area where our food can have a real impact. We believe that every pet should enjoy the benefits of premium nutrition. Healthy pets are happy pets and more readily adoptable,” said Mr. Mitchell.

New Research to Study Impact of Therapy Dog-Assisted Forensic Interviews with Children

HABRI and Pet Partners award grant to University of Toledo.

(PRESS RELEASE) The Human Animal Bond Research Institute and Pet Partners have announced a grant to the University of Toledo for a new study, Implementation of Canine-Assisted Forensic Interviews with Children. This lab-based study will examine the effect of the presence of a therapy dog on the quantity and quality of children’s event reports.

“From countless anecdotal evidence, we know that a visit from a registered Pet Partners therapy dog can put a smile on a child’s face, no matter what they are going through,” said Annie Peters, president and CEO of Pet Partners. “Scientific research to validate the efficacy of therapy dogs in forensic interviewing has the potential to not only provide more children with much needed comfort and emotional support, but to also promote justice for such a vulnerable population.”

“The overarching goal of the study is to provide evidence-based guidelines regarding how and when to incorporate therapy dogs in legal settings,” said the study’s principal investigator, Kamala London of the University of Toledo. “We expect that this study will help support therapy dog-assisted forensic interviews as a safe, affordable, and widely available technique that may improve the accuracy and quality of event reports among maltreated children.”

Only about 15 percent of all child maltreatment cases come to the attention of authorities. Among cases that do come forward, children may be reluctant to disclose traumatic experiences, particularly when those experiences involve family member perpetrators. Over the past decade, forensic and legal professionals have begun to incorporate dogs into their practices in an effort to build rapport and trust, and foster a warm, supportive environment for children. Despite the increase in practice, the effects of therapy dog-assisted forensic interviews have not been studied. This study will work to address this identified gap in human-animal interaction research. 120 children age 6-9 will experience a rich, interactive, staged event. A week later, the children will undergo an analogue forensic interview, where exposure to Pet Partners therapy dogs will be randomly varied. Interviews will be transcribed and coded for accuracy and completeness. Using video recording, behavior during the interaction with the therapy dog, including the duration of time the child spent petting the dog, will be scored. London and co-investigator Janet Hoy-Gerlach, expect the therapy dog-assisted interviews to bolster children’s event reports, leading to increases in both quantity and quality of children’s reports.

“This study will build upon current knowledge of the benefits of therapy dogs while looking at a unique setting, forensic interviewing, which has not yet been studied,” said HABRI Executive Director Steven Feldman. “HABRI is grateful for the support of Pet Partners for this project, which has great potential to make a difference for children who have experienced maltreatment or abuse.”

Animal Supply Company Creates Solution for Indies to Sell Online

This will be through a digital e-fulfillment and delivery solution that connects independent pet retailers with their shoppers.

(PRESS RELEASE) Animal Supply Company has announced it will partner with major e-commerce platforms, including BigCommerce andShopify, to help independent pet retailers expand beyond traditional walls and enter the online space. These partnerships will enable ASC to continue to grow Animal Supply Connect, a digital e-fulfillment and delivery solution that connects independent pet retailers with their shoppers.

According to studies from Nielsen, e-commerce sales are growing 10 times faster (53 percent) than the total growth of the pet consumable category (5 percent). One in four Americans also said they are more likely to buy pet food online than in a traditional brick-and-mortar store. Animal Supply Connect helps independent pet retailers easily create and manage an online storefront, providing them an avenue to retain current customers and win back customers who may have migrated to an online seller.

“Having an online presence is the next frontier for independent pet retailers,” said Angela Spears, senior vice president for digital strategy and marketing at ASC. “The specialty pet channel is distinguished by a focus on high-quality products, service and expertise, all of which can live and serve consumers in a digital space. Animal Supply Connect enables independent retailers to grow their local roots and create an unmatched shopping experience for pet parents. It’s a win-win for pet parents, who can continue to support their neighborhood pet store, whether they choose to shop in store or online.”

Animal Supply Connect simplifies the process for retailers to establish an e-commerce website by partnering with platforms such as BigCommerce, Shopify and eTailPet. Through these platforms, retailers can utilize web templates, digital tools and customer service support to create a customized website. Then, ASC provides its e-commerce app for the retailer to automatically download and select products from ASC’s online catalog of approximately 5,000 products. When pet parents place orders with the retailer, the order is automatically sent to Animal Supply Company to fulfill and ship within two business days.

“Going online offers independent pet retailers a huge competitive advantage because it further extends the reach of their storefront, giving their customers yet another way to shop,” said MaryAnn Bekkedahl, senior vice president of business development at BigCommerce. “By partnering with Animal Supply Company, our goal is to provide pet retailers all the tools and educational support needed to tap into this opportunity quickly and efficiently, so they can focus on growing their business to the next level, not trying to understand the nuances of an online platform.”

“ASC is deeply committed to helping independent pet retailers compete and succeed online. It has been our vision that started three years ago,” Spears added. “We will continue using our talented internal digital team, and best-in-class technology partners like OROCommerce, to help us think differently about the ways we can support independent pet retailers.”

Last year, a new retail website and mobile app were also introduced to provide a modern, integrated user experience for retailers to place their store’s orders with ASC.
