(PRESS RELEASE) DES MOINES, IA — Last month, Ashley Brinkman, government affairs director at the Pet Advocacy Network, traveled from Washington, D.C. to Iowa to speak at the Iowa Pet Breeders Association (IaPBA) Seminar. She addressed a group of dedicated dog breeders on critical legislative developments and advocacy efforts shaping the pet care community.

Brinkman underscored the value of events like the IaPBA Seminar as powerful tools for pet professionals to expand their knowledge and actively influence the future of their industry.

“Seminars provide an invaluable opportunity to learn from experts, engage in meaningful discussions, and stay ahead of industry changes,” Brinkman said. “Whether you’re earning continuing education credits or keeping up with the latest developments, participating in these events is key to long-term success.”

IaPBA President Jesse Forquer reinforced the importance of engagement. “Breeders need to do more than just stay informed—we have got to work together, share what we know, and make sure ethical breeding has a strong future in Iowa and beyond. When we stand united and speak up as a community, we’re much more effective.”

A key theme of Brinkman’s presentation was the need for breeders to proactively engage with local and state clubs, groups, and organizations. She encouraged attendees to take an active role in their communities and to be more vocal about the positive contributions of responsible breeders.

“When you’re involved in local groups, you not only stay informed about potential regulatory changes, but you also have the chance to help shape public perception and advocate for responsible practices,” Brinkman said.

She also emphasized the importance of building relationships with local policymakers. “You absolutely need to know who your city council members are, your state representatives—these are the people making decisions that impact your business. Building proactive relationships now will put you in a stronger position later when policy changes arise.”

Brinkman also warned against complacency in today’s increasingly restrictive political climate. “Without active participation, others will dictate the future of this industry without your input. Attending seminars and building a strong network within the pet care community is essential to supporting responsible breeding.”

As 2025 progresses, the Pet Advocacy Network encourages pet professionals to continue participating in seminars and local industry groups. These events help breeders stay informed, connect with peers, and safeguard their businesses.

The Pet Advocacy Network also invites pet professionals to join its annual D.C. Fly-In on September 16, 2025, where pet professionals from across the country come together to advocate for the future of the pet care community. This is a unique opportunity to meet with your federal representatives and senators, share your expertise, and make your voice heard on key issues impacting responsible pet ownership and businesses. Don’t miss this opportunity to help shape policies that affect pets and the people who care for them!
