(PRESS RELEASE) BOULDER, CO — The Pet Sustainability Coalition coordinated a 30-day sprint that began on Earth Day, (April 22, 2022) with a goal to inspire 10,000 actions that lead to a better future for pets, people, and the planet. Over 600 participants from the pet industry came together and completed a total of 12,034 actions, far exceeding the original goal. Participants completed a wide range of actions from learning what sets Fair Trade products apart, to downloading tools from PSC’s DEI Toolkit, to taking on food waste.

Overall Top 5 PSC Member Teams include Petcurean, Canidae, Stella & Chewy’s, Instinct, and Earth Animal. “At Petcurean we value our company culture very much and we used this rally to create an amazing environment where we could exchange on a very important topic. In the first week we managed to surpass our company’s 30-day goal but we kept going to keep the spirit alive, by creating many sub-challenges within Petcurean across departments and committees. It definitely shows how such initiatives can help nurture the company’s culture and the individuals that ultimately will shape a better pet industry in the 21st century.” Christine Mallier, Petcurean sustainability & community relations manager.

The Top 5 Individuals included Mike Justice of Stella & Chewy’s, Christine Mallier of Petcurean, Nadine Sowers of Champion Petfoods, Brandi Piche of Petcurean, and Theresa Lantz of Petcurean. Other top performers included top ranking distributor Animal Supply Company, and the top manufacturer outside of food, AB7 America.

The 2022 Earth Day Rally marks the most extensive multi-stakeholder sustainability initiative for the Pet Sustainability Coalition, working in partnership with the Pet Advocacy Network, IndiePet, Pet Advocacy Network (formerly PIJAC), American Pet Products Association, World Pet Association and the National Animal Veterinary Council. “PIDA was delighted to join the Pet Sustainability Coalition on a 30-day sprint to inspire 10,000 actions that lead to a better future for pets, people, and planet. It was a great initiative for the good of our industry and the world at large.” Celeste Powers, Pet Industry Distributors Association president.

This rally was only possible with our generous Earth Day Rally Sponsors, including Earth Animal, KONG Company, Pet Food Experts, Stella & Chewy’s, Instinct, West Paw and many more.

At first it was just an idea: Animal supplements needed the same quality control that human-grade supplements receive. But that was enough to start a movement and an organization —the National Animal Supplement Council — that would be dedicated to establishing a comprehensive path forward for the animal supplements industry. In this Media Spotlight interview, NASC’s president, Bill Bookout, talks to PETS+ interviewer Chloe DiVita about the industry today: Where it’s headed, what’s the latest focus and why it’s vital to gain the involvement of independent pet product retailers.
