(PRESS RELEASE) The first pet food product to carry the blue Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) label will soon be rolled out at retail, the Global Aquaculture Alliance announced in early March. MacKnight Food Group’s Smoked Salmon & Sweet Potato Bites are produced at the company’s processing plant in Miami, Florida, USA, which obtained BAP-certification in October 2017 and is capable of producing four-star BAP salmon.

Marketed under the Snif-Snax brand, Smoked Salmon & Sweet Potato Bites are among a number of dog treats produced by MacKnight, which launched Snif-Snax just this year.

“We are honored to be able to work with BAP. Being the first company to manufacture an all-natural, wholesome smoked salmon pet treat carrying the BAP label is something we are all extremely proud of,” said MacKnight CEO Jonathan Brown, who has more than 35 years of experience in the salmon business.

Smoked Salmon & Sweet Potato Bites are made with four-star BAP Atlantic salmon, sweet potato and natural hardwood smoke. The salmon originates from BAP- certified hatcheries and BAP-certified farms and are nourished from a BAP- certified feed mill, giving it its four-star BAP status.

The salmon is exactly the same product used for human consumption. It’s minced and then mixed with sweet potato at the company’s 15,000-square-foot BAP-certified processing plant. The salmon-and-sweet-potato mix is then formed into sausages, sliced by hand, baked and smoked.

Snif-Snax pet food products, which include Smoked Salmon Cutlets and Smoked Salmon Fillets, are currently available for sale on the Snif-Snax website and Amazon.

These products are rich in omega-3s, antibiotic-free, gluten-free and made with only two natural ingredients, which appeals to the burgeoning high-end pet food market. MacKnight says it is committed to using materials that are responsibly produced, safe and traceable, and the company hopes to introduce a range of Snif-Snax dog treats carrying the BAP label.

MacKnight Food Group produces a wide variety of smoked salmon products using Atlantic salmon farmed in Scotland, Norway and Chile, including smoked salmon sides, sliced smoked salmon, smoked salmon fleurettes, smoked salmon mignons, salmon bacon and salmon burgers.

NASC Media Spotlight

At first it was just an idea: Animal supplements needed the same quality control that human-grade supplements receive. But that was enough to start a movement and an organization —the National Animal Supplement Council — that would be dedicated to establishing a comprehensive path forward for the animal supplements industry. In this Media Spotlight interview, NASC’s president, Bill Bookout, talks to PETS+ interviewer Chloe DiVita about the industry today: Where it’s headed, what’s the latest focus and why it’s vital to gain the involvement of independent pet product retailers.
