APPOINTMENT SCHEDULE. CHECK! Comfy sneakers. Check! Excitement about seeing new products and our awesome readers — retailers and brands alike — in person. You bet!

If you’re like me, Global Pet Expo can’t get here fast enough. Produced by the American Pet Products Association and the Pet Industry Distributors Association, it runs Mar. 23 through 25 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL, back in person after a 2021 virtual show. (Thanks, pandemic.)

We wanted to give you a sneak peek at what 58 brands will be talking about in their booths, so those of you attending can put them on your must-visit list and so retailers not making the trip also have access to new product info.

The companies featured here are just a fraction of the number — more than 1,000 — exhibiting at the show. We’ll be reporting live from Global, sharing even more products on petsplusmag.com and Facebook. (Search for PETS+ on the social media platform to find our page and join our private group.)

If you are attending, we’d love for you to join us Thursday, Mar. 24, at 3 p.m. for our annual “PETS+: The Cool Kids” education session, featuring winners of our America’s Coolest contest. This year, Jennifer Thomas of Lucky Dog Bakery,
Anna Woodcock of Brown Dog Bakery and Keith Zeiler of Paws on Chicon will be on the panel, talking about what helps set their indie stores apart. (Spoilers: a Hairy Pawtter event, a biscuit and chew bar with more than 100 varieties, and a doggie fro-yo machine complete with toppings bar.)

Finally, please stop by the PETS+ booth, 5809, if you’ll be at the show. We’d love to meet you in real life.

What are you waiting for? Let’s get shopping!

The Dog-O’s Cheesy Chompers from MARCOOT JERSEY CREAMERY were a hit with retailers who received them in our October PETS+ Sample Box. This will be the brand’s first trade show, so be sure to stop by to say hello and hear about the new bacon flavor of this chew, which they are eager and ready to share with new retail partners. Food

Let’s Talk Science

If you delve deep into the science and research behind a food before bringing it in, be sure to stop by INSTINCT PET FOOD’s booth. The company will focus on its newest product line, Instinct Raw Longevity, and can talk about how Instinct supports multiple studies of its products and raw feeding in general. Senior Director of Scientific Affairs at the company Susan G. Wynn, DVM, DACVIM (Nutrition), says, “We have collaborated with scientists at the University of Lincoln and the Illinois Institute of Technology to validate our HPP protocol. High-pressure processing is used on all of our frozen and freeze-dried raw recipes to ensure they are free from pathogenic bacteria like salmonella, E. coli and listeria.” She also points to Instinct’s support of the DogRisk research program at University of Helsinki, which studies connections between health and disease in dogs, and how different types of diets, including raw, may influence both.

Also expect to hear about Raw Longevity’s sourcing and the company’s sustainability efforts. Instinct Director of Innovation Mitch Rolnick says, “All our raw meat is responsibly sourced, and our raw recipes are made in small batches in our own kitchens in Lincoln, NE, to ensure high quality and food safety. We work with suppliers we’ve verified, with proteins sourced from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia and France. Our fruit and vegetables are non-GMO, and our raw recipes have no artificial flavors or preservatives. We also make our raw food without grain, soy, legumes, corn, wheat or fillers.” He adds, “We are proud to be one of the first raw brands with a recyclable raw frozen bag made of recycled material! All bags of Instinct Raw Longevity Raw Frozen Meals are recyclable. Pet parents can take the cleaned, empty bags to any store that accepts plastic bag/wrap drop-offs. This is just the first step in our sustainability journey.” The company also belongs to the Pet Sustainability Coalition.

Sustainable Protein

Check out EARTH ANIMAL’s Wisdom in catfish at the New Product Showcase as well as the company’s booth. The dog food continues EA’s commitment to sustainability by using Chesapeake Bay catfish, an invasive species profoundly impacting the bay’s ecosystem, but serving as an excellent source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. The food offers an alternative to the line’s existing turkey and chicken.

Company founder Dr. Bob Goldstein points to sourcing and quality as being key in the food’s appeal to retailers and customers. “Pet parents are much more aware of the importance of good nutrition and safety to support the wellness and longevity of their pets. In this time of increasing pet food recalls, consumers want to know that what they feed their pets is safe. They want to know which ingredients are in the food, where they come from, and that they have been humanely and sustainably sourced,” he says, adding, “I know from my long career in veterinary medicine, and from personal experience with my own pets, that the same foods that best nourish people also best nourish dogs. Humanely raised protein, a rainbow of organic fruits and vegetables, and carefully selected vitamins, minerals, seeds and sprouts provide natural, power-packed life-source nutrition. We use our patented wind technology to gently air-dry the ingredients so they retain their natural benefits at our own SQF-certified ‘craftery.’ Riverstone, our manufacturing plant, gives us the ultimate control over sourcing, production and safety.”

Build an Even Better Bowl

PRIMAL expands its toppers line with Freeze-Dried Raw Toppers in beef, chicken, fish, pork and turkey. Senior Director of Marketing Kyle Frautnick says, “More parents are switching to fresh and raw foods because it’s becoming more accessible at a large number of neighborhood pet stores. It’s no longer an all-or-nothing proposition when it comes to feeding fresh or raw food options. Naturally, pet parents want to feed their pets the best they can, and raw or fresh add-on products help them do just that with little to no additional effort.” The toppers will be initially sold at independent pet stores in U.S. and Canada, and then on select authorized e-commerce channels later this year.

Waste Management

Loyalty Rewards

The big news with INTERSAND at Global won’t involve a product. Instead, the cat litter company will be talking about its new loyalty program for pet specialty retailers. Vice President of Sales and Marketing Carl Dubois says, “In celebration of our company’s 30th anniversary, and recent expansion in the U.S. with the opening of our new, state-of-the-art production facility outside Denver, CO, we are thrilled to invite retailers to join our new and exclusive program, OdorLock Prime, where they can earn points to receive very exciting prizes.” After registering through the program’s app, U.S. retailers will earn points for every purchase of OdorLock. Points are tracked and tallied in the OdorLock Prime app, and throughout 2022, gifts will be distributed, including 10 grand prizes of a trip for two to Denver for a Nuggets Game, tour of the Intersand facility and group dinner. Retailers will also have the opportunity to collect gift certificates from a choice of retailers, and multiple participants will receive free bags of OdorLock. Stop by the Intersand booth to register during the show.

Cleanup on Aisle…

SKOUT’S HONOR continues its commitment to changing what people expect from a pet product. Co-founder and CEO Pete Stirling says, “Cleaning products that are both environmentally responsible and work extremely well are in high demand. In the past, customers often had to choose between a product that worked at getting the dirty work done, or one that wasn’t trashing the environment. Thankfully that is no longer the case, and there are products that can do both at the same time.” With that in mind, the company made Severe Mess Dog and Severe Mess Cat, making their show debut at Global. The most powerful plant-based stain and odor solution from Skout’s Honor yet, they are designed to tackle the absolute worst pet messes on the planet, including urine, feces, vomit, diarrhea, mud, blood, grease and even wine. Safe for use on carpets, furniture, clothing, bedding and more.
