Early to bed, early to rise helps Megan Ames stay motivated and mindful, important factors in the success of her high-end holistic pet store and self-serve dog wash, Bark & Luv. She opened the business in early 2024 with help from star Dachshund employee Elliot. “I get up at 4 to 5 a.m., seven days a week. This has been a habit since Elliot came into my life. He comes out from under his blanket burrow on my bed to wake me.” Yorkie Harper and Dachshund Gracie have since joined their pack, and Ames points to snuggle time with all three as an activity that keeps her grounded. Plus hair and massage appointments, of course. Up next for Ames? Opening a second Bark & Luv in Arizona.

In this Media Spotlight interview, NASC’s president, Bill Bookout, talks to PETS+ interviewer Chloe DiVita about the industry today: Where it’s headed, what’s the latest focus and why it’s vital to gain the involvement of independent pet product retailers.
