(PRESS RELEASE) WASHINGTON – Retailers are preparing for one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year with an estimated 165.3 million people likely to shop Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday, according to the annual survey released by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics.

“The tradition of Thanksgiving weekend holiday shopping has become a five-day event with consumers spending money in stores, supporting local small businesses, and online with their mobile devices and computers,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. “Even as people are starting to purchase gifts earlier in the season, consumers still enjoy finding good Thanksgiving deals and passing time shopping with family and friends over the long holiday weekend.”

Throughout the course of the holiday weekend, 39.6 million consumers are considering shopping on Thanksgiving Day, 114.6 million on Black Friday, 66.6 million on Small Business Saturday and 33.3 million on Sunday. The shopping weekend will wrap up on Cyber Monday, when 68.7 million are expected to take advantage of online bargains.

Shay said younger consumers are significantly more likely to shop over the Thanksgiving weekend. Among those ages 18-24, 88 percent say they are likely to shop and particularly enjoy the social aspect. Similarly, 84 percent of those ages 25-34 plan to shop. That compares with 69 percent of holiday shoppers overall.

Of those planning to shop, there is an almost even split of people who plan to start their shopping in-store (47 percent) compared with those who plan to start online (41 percent). Those under 25 are even more likely to say they expect to start shopping in-store (52 percent).

“We expect the biggest increase in potential shoppers for Thanksgiving Day this year,” Prosper Insights Executive Vice President of Strategy Phil Rist said. “We anticipate that people may head to stores if they are open or shop from their phones while watching football.”

The top reasons consumers are planning to shop include:

The deals are too good to pass up (65 percent)
Tradition (28 percent)
It’s when they like to start their holiday shopping (22 percent)
It’s something to do over the holiday (21 percent)
It’s a group activity with friends/family (17 percent)
For consumers who do not plan to shop, more than half (53 percent) say something could convince them. The top reasons given that would change their minds are a sale or discount on an item they want (26 percent), if a family member or friend invites them to shop (12 percent), if they could be sure the items they want are available (11 percent) or a free shipping offer (11 percent).

NRF’s annual forecast estimates that holiday retail sales in November and December will be up between 3.8 percent and 4.2 percent over 2018 for a total of between $727.9 billion and $730.7 billion.

The survey of 7,917 adult consumers’ Thanksgiving weekend plans was conducted Oct. 31 through Nov. 6 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percentage points.

As PSI’s 2020 Pet Sitter of the Year, Crockett will serve as the “face of the professional pet-sitting industry” throughout 2020 and will be officially crowned at PSI’s 2020 Pet Sitter World Educational Conference in October.

“From the beginning, PSI helped me mold my business, and this award will allow me to give back to my colleagues,” said Crockett. “Pet Sitter of the Year is not just an award; it comes with the responsibility to share my knowledge and to support the members of PSI and our industry as we all strive to be respected professionals.”

Crockett joined PSI in 2009, nearly three years before officially opening Crockett’s Critter Care in 2012. Since that time, she has grown her business by leaps and bounds. Her company now employs six staff sitters and serves approximately 115 households. Crockett has also focused on furthering her education in the pet industry — obtaining her Certified Professional Pet Sitter designation from PSI and her Level 3 status in the Fear Free program, as well as completing the Infectious Disease Management Program.

Despite a busy pet-sitting schedule, Crockett is committed to her local pet community. Since 2002 she has been active in the local rescue community, volunteering for Fran’s Felines, Pals for Paws, and Colonial Capital Humane Society. She has served as an officer, board member, fundraiser, event coordinator, grant writer, newsletter editor, foster parent, and more. After Hurricane Florence, Crockett volunteered to walk the dogs stranded at the shelter as they waited to be reunited with their pet parents. Now she continues to support the local rescue groups by posting adoptable pets on her Facebook page, encouraging people to adopt a shelter pet, and promoting the need to donate locally to support the shelters.

The other top-five finalists in the 2020 Pet Sitter of the Year competition were:

  • Caraline Brockman, CPPS; Cara Care LLC; Chicago, IL
  • Shannon Huskins, CPPS; Paws & Purrs Feline Services; Marietta, GA
  • Cynthia Johnson; Copy Cat & Dog Care Pet Sitting; Lebanon, OH
  • Kim Ottone Tank, CPPS; Apronstrings Pet Sitting; Pollock Pines, CA

(PRESS RELEASE) Merrick Pet Care joined the GivingTuesday movement by matching donations made to its longtime partner, K9s For Warriors. The charitable organization helps veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder find the support and comfort they need by pairing them with a service dog that has been rescued from a high-kill shelter.

Merrick will double all donations made to K9s For Warriors on GivingTuesday (up to $50,000). All funds raised will help support K9s for Warriors’ efforts to train rescue dogs and empower veterans to return to civilian life with dignity and independence. Donations can be made on the K9s For Warriors website.

“Our financial supporters save two lives with one act of kindness — a shelter dog that’s running out of time and a warrior struggling with PTSD,” said Rory Diamond, chief executive officer for K9s For Warriors. “And, thanks to the generosity of our partners at Merrick Pet Care, we are able to double the impact of every GivingTuesday donation.”

Since 2015, Merrick has been the exclusive dog food partner for K9s For Warriors, providing each rescued service dog with all their meals and treats while in training. The company has donated more than $1 million in food and monetary donations to K9s For Warriors in support of the programs and clinical research that provide service dogs to help heal veterans.

“Dogs have a special ability to not only understand us, but also help us find strength when we need it most,” said Tim Simonds, chief executive officer for Merrick Pet Care. “We’re honored to partner with K9s For Warriors to help our hardworking veterans find the unconditional love they deserve in a true best friend — a service dog.”

(PRESS RELEASE) The holiday season can be particularly difficult for military personnel, especially those deployed overseas away from their home and families, including their dogs. DOGTV has partnered with Dogs on Deployment for #GivingTuesday and throughout the month of December to help give peace of mind, concerning their pets, to military members.

This month, DOGTV will give $10 to Dogs on Deployment for every new subscription beginning on #GivingTuesday or you can also give by donating directly to Dogs on Deployment. Visit dogtv.com/givingtuesday and use the code: GivingTuesday to get started. Your donations help Dogs on Deployment achieve their mission to find volunteer boarders willing to care for military pets and promote pet-owner responsibility by providing financial resources for military members to give care for their pets during times of need.

DOGTV also created video greeting cards for several of the dogs in the care of Dogs on Deployment foster homes.

“We’re hoping to brighten the day of our military personnel that can’t make it home to share the holiday this year with their beloved dogs,” stated Beke Lubeach, DOGTV general manager. “We’re excited to partner with Dogs on Deployment this holiday season to help generate awareness and funds for the great work they do all year long.”

Dogs on Deployment is a national nonprofit providing a central network for military members to find volunteers willing to board their pets while they are deployed or have other service commitments, making them unable to temporarily care for their pets. No pet should ever be surrendered to a shelter due to a military commitment. Dogs on Deployment exists to help military members keep their pets by alleviating the need for pet relinquishment from military members due to the hardships of deployments.

DOGTV is the only technology created specifically for dogs to help them relax and to entertain them when their pet parents have to leave the home and leave their dogs home alone. The sights and sounds that DOGTV provides enriches the dogs’ environment and allows them to experience happy stimulation and relaxation. Over 1 million happy dogs love and trust DOGTV every day.

DOGTV is currently available through DIRECTV, DISH, Comcast Xfinity, COX, RCN, Apple TV, Chromecast, Amazon FireTV, Roku, and as an iOS and Android app.
