Amazon Names New Head of Retail

Doug Herrington

Amazon (Seattle) has named Doug Herrington the new chief of its Worldwide Amazon Stores business, CEO Andy Jassy announced.

Herrington is a 17-year company vet who joined Amazon in 2005 to build its consumables business. His notable achievements include launching AmazonFresh in 2007 and taking leadership of North American retail in 2015.

Amazon Stores, previously called the “Consumer” business, includes the company’s online and physical stores, the Amazon.com marketplace and its Prime subscription.

In the announcement, Jassy said:

“I remain very optimistic about our Stores business, and believe we’re still in the early days of what’s possible. It’s worth remembering that Amazon currently only represents about 1% of the worldwide retail market segment share, and 85% of that worldwide market segment share still resides in physical stores.

If you believe that equation will change over time (which I do), there’s *a lot* of potential for us as we continue to be laser-focused on providing the best customer experience (broadest selection, low prices, fast and convenient delivery) while working on our cost structure to have the right long-term business.”

Herrington succeeds Dave Clark, who left Amazon this month after 23 years at the company to become CEO at logistics startup Flexport.

Jassy also announced the promotion of John Felton, an 18-year company vet who has worked in retail and operations finance leadership roles as well as global customer fulfillment. He will now head the company’s operations organization.
