And the Most Popular Halloween Costume for Pets Is …

Check out the top 10 pet costumes.

Halloween is big business in the U.S., and there are plenty of opportunities for the pet industry to get a piece of the action.

More than 179 million Americans plan to partake in festivities this year, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual Halloween survey. That’s up from 171 million last year, with spending slated to reach a record high in survey history.

Of those planning to celebrate the holiday, 16 percent intend to dress up their pets, according to NRF.

The most popular costume choice for animals: the humble pumpkin.

Interestingly, many pets will go dressed as dogs and cats. Perhaps that means the idea of dressing up a dog as a cat or a cat as a dog isn’t quite as original as some pet owners think.

Here’s the top 10 list:

  1. Pumpkin
  2. Hot dog
  3. Dog/lion/pirate (tie)
  4. Bumblebee
  5. Devil
  6. Batman character
  7. Ghost
  8. Cat
  9. Witch
  10. Star Wars character
