Pet Sitters International Highlights Safe Pet-sitting Practices During Pet Sitter Safety Month

(PRESS RELEASE) KING, N.C. — Pet Sitters International (PSI) encourages pet sitters to review its procedures and PSI’s safety tips this May during the eighth annual Pet Sitter Safety Month, an observance created by PSI in 2017 to highlight the importance of promoting safe practices for today’s professional pet sitters and dog walkers.

PSI, the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters, will highlight a variety of safety-related topics for pet sitters online throughout the month of May, and pet sitters and dog walkers can visit the Pet Sitter Safety Month section to access safety tips and resources, as well as information about special discounts for the month. The association is also offering new training opportunities on mental health and wellness, as well as health and sanitation.

“Professional pet sitters and dog walkers have long prioritized safe practices in its businesses, but each May—ahead of the busy summer vacation season—we encourage them to take a fresh look at pet-sitting practices and review important tips to ensure they have the best practices in place to promote safe pet sitting,” said PSI president Beth Stultz-Hairston. “This May we’re also excited to offer new trainings to provide pet sitters with the information they need to protect themselves, clients, and businesses.”

As part of its Pet Sitter Safety Month offerings, PSI is hosting a free online Pet Sitter Mental Health and Wellness Summit on May 21, open to all pet-care providers (PSI membership not required). The first event of its kind for the professional pet-sitting industry, the summit will feature educational sessions as well as bonus resources designed to emphasize the importance of prioritizing mental health and wellness. Pet-care providers can register for free online.

“Safe pet sitting is about so much more than situational awareness and avoiding accidents or hazards,” Stultz-Hairston shared. “We want to ensure pet sitters have practices in place to protect their mental and physical wellbeing, as well as the wellbeing of the pets in their care.”

PSI also launched a new training on May 1, the Health & Sanitation Certificate Course for Pet-Sitting Businesses, covering the information professional pet sitters and dog walkers need to put practices in place to prevent the spread of disease and provide clients with peace of mind.

“More than three decades ago when I started pet sitting, there were no pet-sitting specific resources available to me,” said PSI founder & CEO Patti Moran. “We are thrilled to offer easy-to-access tools and trainings that enable professional pet sitters to provide excellent pet-care services—safely, and with confidence.”
