(PRESS RELEASE) LAS VEGAS, NV – At a gathering of pet industry professionals, Las Vegas City Council members Michele Fiore and Steve Seroka were recognized as “Pets’ Best Friends” by the Pet Leadership Council. The award, which was presented Tuesday night during the annual Chairman’s Reception at the World Pet Association’s SuperZoo national trade show, recognizes the councilmembers for their “tireless effort on behalf of companion animals and those who serve and support them.”
Upon presenting the award to Fiore and Seroka on behalf of the Pet Leadership Council, WPA Chairman Michael Twain praised their support for pets and their companions in Las Vegas and across the country. “Here in Las Vegas, pets and pet owners alike are lucky to have friends in Councilmembers Fiore and Seroka,” said Twain. “Almost two-thirds of American households include a pet, and 95% of pet owners consider their pet a part of the family. We are grateful to Councilmembers Fiore and Seroka for their leadership and common-sense approach to legislation that encourages animal health, responsibility and education among pet care professionals, pet owners and the general public.”
Responsible pet ownership is an issue that truly unites America. More than 79.7 million households own at least one pet, including 73% of households with children. 63% of women and 60% of men nationwide own pets, with ownership rates of 59% among Democrats and 68% among Republicans. Studies have demonstrated health benefits including decreased stress and obesity rates and improved heart health among pet owners, and pets have also been shown to have positive impacts on families with autistic children as well as those suffering from memory impairment and post-traumatic stress.
