Top Grocery M&A Deals of 2023

While the outcome of the Kroger-Albertsons merger is apparently not going to be resolved until next month at the earliest, the grocery industry still saw a flurry of mergers and acquisitions in 2023, Grocery Dive reports. Here’s that news outlet’s look back at the major grocery industry deals this year:

1. Aldi to acquire Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket
2. Ahold Delhaize USA selling FreshDirect to Getir
3. Price Chopper purchases 5 former New York ShopRite stores
4. PFSbrands acquires Mid-Missouri grocer Moser’s Foods
5. Foxtrot and Dom’s announce merger
6. SpartanNash acquires Midwestern grocery supplier Great Lakes Foods
7. Brookshire Grocery prescribes a sale for most of its pharmacies
8. El Rancho Supermercado bought by Heritage Grocers Group
9. Coborn’s to buy Sullivan’s Foods
10. KeHe to purchase DPI Specialty Foods
11. Sprouts acquires two stores in Southern California

The Kroger/Albertsons deal did take at least one major step this year, Grocery Dive notes, with the two grocery giants unveiling a $1.9 billion definitive agreement with C&S Wholesale Grocers. That plan would see Kroger and Albertsons offload 413 stores — and potentially up to 650 — as well some private brands, distribution centers and offices to appease regulators.
