Bobi, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest dog living and the oldest dog ever, has died at 31 years and 165 days of age.
The dog spent his whole life with owner Leonel Costa and his family in the Portuguese village of Conqueiros, according to Guinness. He passed away on Oct. 20 at an animal hospital.
He was a Rafeiro do Alentejo, which is a breed of livestock guardian dog with an average life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.
“Despite outliving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on earth would never be enough, for those who loved him,” Dr. Karen Becker, a veterinarian who met Bobi several times, wrote on Facebook. “Godspeed, Bobi…you’ve taught the world all you were meant to teach.”
The dog broke an almost century-old record; the previous oldest dog ever, Bluey (1910-1939), was an Australian cattle-dog who lived to be 29 years, 5 months.
