Dexter’s Deli in San Diego, CA, won third place in the 2020 PETS+ America’s Coolest Store Contest, as decided by a panel of editorial and industry judges. The store holds events — when safe to do so during COVID-19 — on its side patio. A bright red fire hydrant adds to the welcoming charm. Tori Rosay opened her first Dexter’s Deli in 1996. There are three: Carlsbad, Del Mar and the winning location in North Park. The stores offer expertise on raw foods and even have their own raw brand. Gifts for people and pets greet visitors. A table full of toys. Cats get their own section at Dexter’s Deli. Rosay with Blueberry, the Chief Dog in Residence. A favorite saying of Rosay’s — and the philosophy behind the foods they sell — adorns a wall at the store. The “Dogs” sign reflects the historic, hipster vibe of the North Park neighborhood. Dexter’s Deli has its own brand of jerkey. And its own brand of biscuits. The Barkers Dozen special offers savings to customers. Employees use this pop-up booth to hand out free samples — again, when safe during COVID-19. It also transforms into a fundraising booth for campaigns such as Save a Sweetheart. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefitted the Spay Neuter Action Project. Rosay hands over the $10,000 check! Dexter’s Deli also gives animal rescues gift envelopes, each with a $10 off coupon and product vouchers redeemable in-store. When the raffle winner comes in, Rosay says, “It’s our chance to shine, and they are super happy to try new products for their pets.
