The Green K9 sits in a mixed-use development in Urbana, MD. It offers pet products, grooming and self-wash, and day care to residents and non-residents alike. Marni Lewis knew the 300 pet-friendly apartments would provide her with a steady stream of customers. The design aesthetic prioritizes sustainability. Repurposed whiskey barrels make up the checkout counter, with moss signage and vintage fixtures found throughout. The bright, neat space has a welcoming vibe that Lewis describes as coffeehouse meets pet store. Dogs in tow can enjoy a treat from the sample bar while their human sips a cup of complementary coffee, both on the comfy couch. Lewis also prioritizes sustainability with her product selection, from food to toys. Two fully contained self-wash rooms see a steady stream of customers, with weekends requiring appointments. Lewis and her team recommend products to use in the self-wash, and many customers purchase their own to use at the store and at home. Customers can watch pups at play in the day-care area. It features an eco-scape mural that complements the retail area’s design. Outside, day-care pups run around in a 1,000-square-foot play yard.
