Animal Groups Seek to Save Pets Amid Hurricane Aftermath

The hope is to reunite them with their owners.

Several organizations are working to protect pets that become separated from their owners as a result of Hurricane Harvey.

USA Today reports that the strategy begins with moving animals that are already living in Texas shelters. They’re being taken by plane and will be put up for adoption in other regions of the U.S.

That will make space in Houston-area shelters for newly displaced animals, giving them their best shot at being reunited with their owners.

Participating organizations include the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Wings of Rescue, the Humane Society of the United States and GreaterGood.org.

USA Today reports that on Monday the Humane Society was getting “preparing to send about 100 dogs from a shelter in San Antonio to another location in the northeast.”
