“Keeping It Clean: Expert Panel on Sanitation Practices for Grooming & Boarding Facilities,” hosted by Cliff Faver, DVM, and Micah Kohles, DVM, was different from other GROOM’D sessions because there wasn’t a PowerPoint presentation or a set script. Instead, they opened the floor to any questions attendees had about sanitation practices, and there were several!

The experts started by explaining the difference between cleaning and disinfecting work areas and that you can’t do both at the same time. You start off by cleaning surface dirt, bacteria and grime, and then disinfect for a deeper clean.

Dr. Kohles explained that consistency is key when it comes to thorough cleaning efforts and recommended establishing opening and closing procedures in the form of a checklist. Following the same checklist each time establishes expectations, ensures that the cleaning process is completed using the exact same methods by each employee, and helps ensure that nothing gets overlooked. It’s also a good idea to keep quarterly and yearly checklists as well. These lists will document those “out of sight, out of mind” items, such as tubing in bathing stations and other places where mold hides.

One topic many attendees were interested in was how to know if they’re using the right cleaning products. Both experts agreed that there are many great products available and wouldn’t recommend one specific brand. Instead, they stressed the importance of using products properly — more doesn’t always mean better — and allowing them to sit for the correct contact time, since a quick spray and swipe isn’t effective.

They also recommended establishing a relationship with the brand or company that makes the products. By asking questions about how the products work and which ones are best suited for your specific situation and clients, you can make more informed decisions about not only which ones to use, but also how to properly use them.
