About Norwegian Rescue Dogs (Norske Redningshunder, NRH)
NRH is a voluntary rescue organization that trains dogs and handlers for service in rescue operations. This makes them an important player in the rescue service in Norway. They use the dog’s amazing sense of smell to save lives. Norwegian Rescue Dogs was founded in 1956 and covers the entire country. The organization is divided into districts with associated local teams. Its approved dog handlers are called upon by the main rescue centers and the police for rescue operations. It takes about 2-3 years to train a rescue dog. During the training, handlers learn, among other things, how to train a dog, first aid, communication, orientation and survival in the wild.
The dog handlers have the professional knowledge necessary to be able to contribute during rescue operations. The dogs may be approved within one or more of these disciplines: search (forest and bare ground), avalanche, and USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) in natural disasters and ruins.
