The retail sector was solidly represented in Time magazine’s latest roster of the 100 most influential companies. The list consists of businesses in five different categories: innovators, disrupters, leaders, titans and pioneers.
Here’s how Time says the companies were chosen: “Our editors, requested suggestions and applications from across sectors, surveyed our contributors and correspondents around the world, and sought advice from outside experts. No single data point or financial metric makes a TIME100 Company. Instead, we looked at a mosaic of qualities, studying impact, innovation, ambition and success, each in the forms that take shape today.”
Below are the retailers that made landed within each of the roster’s quintet of categories, followed by a quick blurb on why they made the grade:
Innovators:
- Dick’s Sporting Goods: Luring in-person shoppers
- Gap Inc.: Comeback kid
Disrupters:
- Aldi: Small stores, big growth
- e.l.f. Beauty: Buzzy beauty
- Pop Mart: An “ugly-cute” collectible frenzy
- Prada Group: Focus on Italian fashion

Also, for the first time this year, Time gave out five Impact Awards recognizing standout companies making meaningful contributions in AI, health, sustainability, equality and culture. Those honorees included one firm with a substantial retail presence: Lego, which was honored for its impact on culture.
