Target (Minneapolis) recently took the wraps off a new store in Denton, Texas, that exemplifies its efforts to recapture what the chain calls “Tarzhay magic.” At about 147,000 square feet, the Denton North store “is one of our biggest new builds — and an example of what’s to come as we focus on large-format stores,” the retailer said in a feature story about the complex on its website. “With that extra space, it can accommodate a bigger-than-average fresh and frozen food and beverage section, including organic produce options, bakery and deli.”

More square footage also means room for Apple and Starbucks Cafe shops-in-shops and a large assortment of school supplies and sports apparel for local students. (In addition to primary and secondary schools, the city — which is about 40 miles northwest of downtown Dallas — is home to the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University).

The store also has backroom fulfillment space that’s about five times larger than older stores of a similar size, to support guests’ digital orders and drive-up and order pickup same-day services.

In addition to Denton North, Target’s new store strategy in Texas includes two more locations slated to open later this year, and at least five more planned for the Dallas metro area over the next couple of years, the company said. “This combination of newness and affordable choices, rewarding jobs and community commitment is rolling out to about 20 stores nationwide in 2025, with many more to come in the decade ahead,” the feature concludes.

NASC Media Spotlight

At first it was just an idea: Animal supplements needed the same quality control that human-grade supplements receive. But that was enough to start a movement and an organization —the National Animal Supplement Council — that would be dedicated to establishing a comprehensive path forward for the animal supplements industry. In this Media Spotlight interview, NASC’s president, Bill Bookout, talks to PETS+ interviewer Chloe DiVita about the industry today: Where it’s headed, what’s the latest focus and why it’s vital to gain the involvement of independent pet product retailers.
