A CUSTOMER said she was having a baby shower. She asked us to make a “shower” cake. (One of our specialties is dog cakes that look like cakes people eat.) There was a special purpose for this cake: She did not know the sex of her baby and wanted it to be a surprise. Sooooo, she said she would bring me the envelope with the results of the sex of the baby directly from her doctor. She ordered a double-layer cake and wanted the internal icing to indicate the sex of the baby. When the dog begins to eat the cake, the sex of the baby would be revealed! — Todd Ruppenthal, Happy Husky Bakery, Evanston, IL

In this Media Spotlight interview, NASC’s president, Bill Bookout, talks to PETS+ interviewer Chloe DiVita about the industry today: Where it’s headed, what’s the latest focus and why it’s vital to gain the involvement of independent pet product retailers.
