NEAR THE FINGER Lakes in upstate New York, more than 300 small animals — rats, mice, Guinea pigs and gerbils — were found by the side of the road in late 2019, most barely clinging to life. The area’s animal-friendly community worked with the local SPCA, and soon donations of food, timothy hay and cleaning supplies flowed in. The small animals were promptly rescued and adopted by the area’s big-hearted residents, many of whom went shopping for these kinds of cages and accessories. Keep them stocked!
