CHICAGO – Wind Point Partners portfolio company Pestell Group has acquired VersaPet Inc., a Toronto-based manufacturer of private label and branded cat litter products.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The transaction was completed through the Pestell Pet Products (PET) business unit

Pestell manufactures animal litter and small animal bedding products. The acquisition increases Pestell’s capacity for cat litter production, and it allows VersaPet to offer additional products from the broader Pestell pet portfolio, including paper-based animal litter, animal bedding, pet treats and dental chews.

Matt Miller, Pestell PET CEO, said, “We are thrilled to welcome VersaPet to the Pestell family. VersaPet brings high-quality cat litter and a great reputation in the industry and we are excited about the future. We look forward to the additional opportunities we can provide customers through our combined business.”

Paul Peterson, Managing Director with Wind Point Partners, stated, “VersaPet has achieved substantial growth, and we believe that the combination with Pestell will serve as a catalyst for even greater growth as the two businesses leverage their respective customer bases.”

The acquisition of VersaPet continues Wind Point’s history of partnering and working with family-held businesses. This marks the third acquisition for PET since Wind Point’s original investment in Pestell, following the acquisitions of BPV Environmental and Targeted Pet Treats.

Elliott Wahle, chairman and CEO of VersaPet, said, “We are extremely pleased to be joining Pestell Pet Products. We believe that this new partnership will dramatically enhance our ability to innovate and allow us to continue to provide the level of service and quality our customers are accustomed to. We are most excited about the next phase of our growth as part of the Pestell organization.”

Wind Point Partners acquired Pestell in June 2018 in partnership with Matt Miller, a more than 20-year veteran of the pet and consumer industries. In cooperation with Miller and management of Pestell, Wind Point will seek to continue expanding the Pestell platform through a combination of organic growth and complementary acquisitions.

A cat from the Isle of Man apparently decided that if her family was heading overseas for vacation, she was going too.

Candy was found in her owners’ carry-on luggage at the island’s airport, the BBC reports.

Nick Poole wrote on Facebook: “You know that feeling, when you get ushered into a side room at airport security because you’ve got a cat in your hand luggage.”

He added: “Fair play to airport security for helping to get her home so we could catch our flight.”

Nick and Voirrey Coole, who were bound for New York, didn’t face any repercussions for having the cat with them. Friends picked up the pet and took her home, Time magazine reports.

A Great Dane puppy was born in Colorado with a highly unusual characteristic: She was green.

The pup, No. 8 in a litter of 9, came into the world on Oct. 14 WTNH-TV reports.

Caddy Williams, owner of the puppy’s mother, Ami, said the situation was “shocking.”

“Luckily, I had recently read an article about a green dog,” she said. “So at least I knew what was going on.”

Green puppies are thought to occur when biliverdin, a green pigment that is part of bile, comes into contact with light-colored fur, WTNH reports.

The resulting dye job lasts a few weeks and is harmless.

PHOENIX — The Dogtopia pet franchise has announced the unveiling of its first Dogtopia @ Work campus. The dog daycare and spa-only location is exclusive to the employees at Wolverine Worldwide in Rockford, MI, and will bring the company-subsidized dog daycare to its 750 employees.

With more than 100 locations across North America, the brand is “the fastest-growing provider of specialty dog daycare,” according to a press release. The Wolverine Worldwide dog daycare center is operated by franchisee Tim Parker, who also owns Dogtopia of Grand Rapids.

“Wolverine Worldwide’s employees asked, and the leadership team listened. Dog daycare was the top benefit request among its 750 workers. We’re thrilled to directly meet that need conveniently on site,” said Neil Gill, president and CEO of Dogtopia. “The corporate campus model makes perfect sense as companies seek to be pet-friendly without having to manage which dogs are current on vaccinations, remaining respectful to those with allergies and removing the risk associated with dogs of different sizes and temperaments in common areas together. This is a win-win as it provides these employees safe socialization, exercise and education for their dogs while providing Dogtopia a brand-new channel for us to share our quality daycare service.”

“It’s important for us to continue to invest in our workplace environment in a way that aligns with our values as an employer of choice, and enriches the daily experience and quality of life of our workforce,” said Blake W. Kreuger, Wolverine Worldwide Chairman, CEO, and President.

“We’re extremely excited to have Dogtopia’s presence and friendly staff at our global headquarters to provide pristine care for our employees’ pets while they help drive our business forward.”
