(PRESS RELEASE) SEATTLE, WA — As the Fourth of July approaches, pet retailers have a unique opportunity to be a lifeline for customers whose dogs struggle with fireworks-induced anxiety. Kat Donatello, founder of natural pet wellness brand Austin and Kat, shares her top tips for helping retailers guide pet parents through the noisiest holiday of the year.

“Fireworks might be fun for us, but for our dogs, they can be absolutely terrifying,” said Donatello. “With the right preparation—and the right products—retailers can empower their customers to keep pets calm, safe, and comfortable during the July 4th celebrations.” Here are Kat’s expert suggestions retailers can pass along to their customers:

  1. Create a Secure Environment
Encourage pet parents to set up a calm, quiet space inside their homes. Windowless rooms or large closets work well, especially when paired with white noise or calming music. Remind them that even a fenced yard isn’t safe if unsupervised.
  2. Check ID Tags and Microchips
Fireworks often lead to an increase in lost pets. Make sure customers update ID tags and microchip details in advance—and know the number of their local shelter in case the unexpected happens.
  3. Stock Up on Stress Relievers
Retailers should spotlight natural calming aids like Austin and Kat’s CBD formulas, designed specifically for pets. Recommend introducing these products well before July 4th to build routine and trust. Don’t forget to promote enrichment toys and treats to keep dogs occupied and distracted.
  4. Encourage Staying Home
Being present during fireworks can make a world of difference. If pet parents must leave, suggest hiring a sitter or asking a friend to provide company and care.
  5. Keep Them Busy During the Day
A tired dog is a happy dog. Recommend early exercise, puzzle toys, and mentally stimulating games to burn energy and support emotional balance.
  6. Start CBD Early and Stay Consistent
“CBD isn’t a magic switch—it works best when it’s part of a thoughtful plan,” said Donatello. “We recommend starting 2–3 days in advance, or ideally a week before, and continuing through July 5th. On the day itself, dosing every two hours from midday through the evening helps maintain calm through the fireworks.”

Retailers can also share this podcast episode where Kat dives deeper into fireworks season tips—including why enrichment toys are such an overlooked but powerful tool in managing stress.

“At Austin & Kat, we’ve always believed in a holistic, pet-first approach,” Donatello added. “From our calming No More Wiggles formula to our daily wellness blends, we’re here to help your customers’ pets live life to the fullest—even during the loudest nights of the year.”
