Scout & Zoe’s Launches Pet Products Made with Black Soldier Fly Larvae

(PRESS RELEASE) INDIANAPOLIS — Scout & Zoe’s, a U.S. sourced and produced pet food and treats provider, launches its newest product line: Super Fly – pet treats created with black soldier fly larvae. The line of products includes Super Fly Black Soldier Fly Larvae, Super Fly Black Soldier Fly Food Topper and Super Fly Black Soldier Fly Jerky.

Producing pet treats with flies may seem non-traditional, and that’s part of the appeal for Cindy Dunston Quirk, Scout & Zoe’s CEO, who is always looking for unique ways to feed animals nutritious and delicious foods that also help the environment.

There are many reasons why the black soldier fly larvae are beneficial for pets and the environment. The larvae feed on food scraps, which helps reduce waste. They can be farmed on a much smaller footprint with much less waste. In one year, an acre of black soldier fly larvae farm can produce as much protein as 3,000 acres of cattle. They don’t create significant amounts of greenhouse gases. As of now, livestock produces 10 percent of the greenhouse gases produced every year.

“At Scout & Zoe’s, we take a thoughtful, well-rounded approach to pet treat development,” says Dunston Quirk. “We’re not just looking at making tasty treats and food, though that is important. We want to things that are delicious, full of nutrients and beneficial to our earth. Our Super Fly products are able to make a positive environmental impact and positively impact the pets who eat them, too. With sustainability as one of our core values, we’re thrilled to utilize these little larvae in an innovative way that takes advantage of their small carbon footprint.”

Scout & Zoe’s Super Fly products contain high amounts of protein, lauric acid and amino acid. All of the company’s products feature no rawhide, pesticides, grains or chemicals.

The Super Fly product line joins other Scout & Zoe’s products that better the planet, including products made from Asian carp, an invasive species of fish that has made their way to U.S. waters.

Creating and distributing products that are delicious and nutritious for pets is Dunston Quirk’s passion, and as such, she also employs disabled adults to help with the packaging of these products.
