Wegmans Food Market (Rochester, N.Y.) said it will open an 87,500-square-foot store lower Manhattan this fall. The store, at 770 Broadway, will debut Oct. 18.

Dubbed The Astor Place store by the regional grocer, it will be the second Wegmans in New York, following the 2019 opening of one in Brooklyn.

“We know our customers can’t wait to come see what we have in store and our employees have been training, in some cases, for over a year to get ready for this day,” said Store Manager Matt Dailor. “Wegmans is a celebration of food and people, and we can’t wait to open the doors on October 18 to our community here in the east village.”

The company said it hired 600 employees to “help create a one-of-a-kind shopping experience in the store’s warm and welcoming atmosphere that reflects the original architecture of the historic Wannamaker building.” An onsite dining room, featuring a Sushi Bar and Champagne-Oyster Bar at Astor Place, will open in the first half of 2024.

Overall, Wegmans Food Markets has 109 stores located along the East Coast.

NASC Media Spotlight

At first it was just an idea: Animal supplements needed the same quality control that human-grade supplements receive. But that was enough to start a movement and an organization —the National Animal Supplement Council — that would be dedicated to establishing a comprehensive path forward for the animal supplements industry. In this Media Spotlight interview, NASC’s president, Bill Bookout, talks to PETS+ interviewer Chloe DiVita about the industry today: Where it’s headed, what’s the latest focus and why it’s vital to gain the involvement of independent pet product retailers.
