A fire broke out next door to a pet store in South Los Angeles, putting the lives of dozens of animals at risk as smoke spread through the building.

Firefighters were able to carry the pets to safety, and it’s believed that all of the animals will be fine, NBC Los Angeles reports. There were no human injuries, although some residents were evacuated from the second floor of the two-story building.

The fire occurred at about 1:35 a.m. Wednesday at Ramirez Pet Shop. The creatures rescued ranged from guinea pigs to reptiles to birds.

It’s not yet known what caused the fire, which firefighters were able to extinguish within half an hour.
