NutriSource has launched a wet food cannery inside the Tuffy’s Treats Co. manufacturing facility in Delano, MN.

The $20 million, 45,000- square-foot expansion will create 45 full-time jobs, according to a press release.

The Green Globe Certified facility features cutting edge x-ray and can inspection equipment, a 3-retort system for sterilization and the ability to produce up to 300 13oz, 5.5oz and 3 oz steel or aluminum cans per minute. Annual production capacity is expected to top 65 million cans.

“Wet pet food manufacturing capacity in North America has struggled to keep up with the growing market demand for canned pet food,” said Mike Hamilton, director of commercialization at NutriSource Pet Foods. “Our investment in this new operation is a direct response to requests from distributors, retailers & customers who are seeking a more consistent and diverse supply of canned dog and cat foods. We are committed to our customers and excited to work with them to deliver more NutriSource products to our furry friends everywhere.”

More from the release:

The Tuffy’s Treats Company opened in 2020. The ultramodern 174,000 sq. ft. facility features the safest environment for pet food safety, efficiency and flexibility. The plant meets or exceeds the stringent requirements of today’s pet food market using sustainable operations that reduce the plant’s environmental footprint and waste.

“NutriSource and Tuffy’s Treat Company have proven to be incredible additions to our community,” said Delano Mayor Dale Graunke. “We are thrilled they continue to view Delano as an exceptional place to live, work and do business. This expansion is welcome news to our beautiful city and we look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with such a forward-thinking, purpose driven company.”

Like all NutriSource products, the new wet food will be available at independent pet stores where the focus is on health and nutrition. Neighborhood stores are better suited to help pet parents make the best choices for pets, and their passion for the well-being of pets mirrors NutriSource’s passion for local business.

NASC Media Spotlight

At first it was just an idea: Animal supplements needed the same quality control that human-grade supplements receive. But that was enough to start a movement and an organization —the National Animal Supplement Council — that would be dedicated to establishing a comprehensive path forward for the animal supplements industry. In this Media Spotlight interview, NASC’s president, Bill Bookout, talks to PETS+ interviewer Chloe DiVita about the industry today: Where it’s headed, what’s the latest focus and why it’s vital to gain the involvement of independent pet product retailers.
