JLL Names 10 Fastest-Growing Grocers in US by Square Footage

Industry is in expansion mode as the pandemic wanes.

No grocer enlarged its U.S. footprint in 2021 more than Aldi, which is pushing to become the third-largest grocer in the country behind The Kroger and Walmart, according to JLL’s Grocery Tracker 2022 cited by Chain Store Age.

Indeed, most grocery companies took advantage of the pandemic as an opportunity to expand. The report said there was a 200% increase in new grocery leases in 2021 compared to 2019.

Here were the 10 fastest-growing grocers in 2021 in terms of adding square footage, according to JLL:

2. Publix
3. Grocery Outlet
4. Giant Eagle
5. Sprouts Farmers Market
6. Amazon Fresh
7. Schnucks
8. ShopRite
9. Whole Foods Market
10. Hy-Vee
