On World Compliment Day, work on your stock of go-to pet compliments. Build a list of 500 or so. “Your dog is so well-behaved.” “Your pet has such an incredible personality.” “Your cat? I can see in her eyes that she is a wise, wise soul.” Every customer wants to feel that their pet is special. You can help make that happen.

6

It’s Professional Pet Sitters Week. These are wonderful people to have as friends of your business — either as direct customers, or as conduits to their customers. Make a plan to reach out.

8

On Proofreading Day, take two or three hours to re-read your website. Look carefully for errors and check every link. Links to different pages or services have a pesky way of deactivating themselves over time.

On of the pet world’s top international events, Crufts, opens in Birmingham, England. The event features an elite competition as well as (according to the Guinness World Records) the world’s biggest selection of (mostly) dog-related goods and services. Sounds to us like a perfect opportunity for a spot of business travel.

12

On Girl Scout Day, reach out to your local troop to arrange some future visits to your business.

20It’s the First Day of Spring, a natural time to promote renewal and healthy activities with beloved pets. How about launching a series of weekly community pet walks?

The pet world assembles in Orlando, FL, for a howling good time at Global Pet Expo. The action continues through March 23. Come see the PETS+ team at Booth 3811.

Today’s calendar reads “Puppy Day.” But really, isn’t EVERY day Puppy Day? Remind your community that your store is the place to head for a tasty treat or training tool for their favorite furball.

23

Acclaimed director Wes Anderson’s ISLE OF DOGS is scheduled to debut today. This should be as much fun as Anderson’s 2009 film, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, which was shot in a similar stop-motion style. Could you rent a theater for your best customers? (Learn more about the movie here: ppmag.us/3181)

On Neighbor Day, say hello to your business neighbor, and thank them for all they do to support you. And if you have never supported each other? Start looking for ways you can.

26

Not every color has its own day. But Purple Day is kinda special. Feature a gallery of purple coiffs for punky poodles today on your website.

A decade ago it seemed that being local, independent and service-minded (compared to price) were all liabilities in the face of the big box onslaught. Now they are competitive strengths. On National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day, revisit your marketing to see how you’re playing up those strengths.

NASC Media Spotlight

At first it was just an idea: Animal supplements needed the same quality control that human-grade supplements receive. But that was enough to start a movement and an organization —the National Animal Supplement Council — that would be dedicated to establishing a comprehensive path forward for the animal supplements industry. In this Media Spotlight interview, NASC’s president, Bill Bookout, talks to PETS+ interviewer Chloe DiVita about the industry today: Where it’s headed, what’s the latest focus and why it’s vital to gain the involvement of independent pet product retailers.
