(PRESS RELEASE) WASHINGTON, DC – The Pet Food Institute (PFI), whose members make the vast majority of dog and cat food and treat products in the United States, commends the Senate confirmation of Robert Califf as commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Dana Brooks, president and CEO of PFI, particularly noted the importance of the agency taking a science-based approach to food safety under Califf’s oversight.

“Food safety is the top priority for PFI members as they work to provide complete and balanced nutrition for pets in the United States and around the world,” said Brooks. “This means that the FDA is an important partner to pet food makers, particularly as the agency continues surveillance and compliance efforts under the Food Safety Modernization Act. We urge FDA to work with its stakeholders and maintain the application of sound and science-driven policies, while ensuring the food is safe for pets.”

At first it was just an idea: Animal supplements needed the same quality control that human-grade supplements receive. But that was enough to start a movement and an organization —the National Animal Supplement Council — that would be dedicated to establishing a comprehensive path forward for the animal supplements industry. In this Media Spotlight interview, NASC’s president, Bill Bookout, talks to PETS+ interviewer Chloe DiVita about the industry today: Where it’s headed, what’s the latest focus and why it’s vital to gain the involvement of independent pet product retailers.
